In 1856, Dr. Alonson W. Leffingwell built an eight-room Greek revival home with two-foot walls of locally quarried sandstone along the old Springfield Road in Sullivan, MO. After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, Dr. Leffingwell resumed his local medical practice, and subsequently sold the home and 160 acres to retired General W. Harney in 1869.
In 1872, construction was completed for a large addition, as well as expansion of the property to encompass 1900 acres. There was a large lake surrounded by plantings of 85 species of trees. Guests to the summer home could walk from the Sullivan Depot along the tree-lined road.
Given Harney’s lengthy military career and service on the Indian Peace Commission one can only imagine his distinguished visitors. In 1984, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Mansion has been revitalized as a social, civic and cultural center for the benefit of the community.
